It's October, therefore I am ethically and morally obliged to binge as many horror films as possible. In an effort to be helpful and uplifting, I'll be using a very simple scale for rating these flicks:
A Must See = ***
Bloody Fun = **
Only for Horror Fans = *
Ready? Let's trick these treats.
WORLD WAR Z - Maybe it's just my post-pandemic anxiety but that panic buying scene might be one of the most nerve jangling moments in a film that had my stomach doing summersaults the entire time. Also, the behind-the-scenes story of how the film was saved with reshoots is just as, if not even more harrowing than the movie itself. ***
THE MUMMY (1932) - Not sure I'd seen this movie prior but it's immediately evident that the best special effect is Boris Karloff's face. Fun fact, this was directed by Karl Freund, the groundbreaking cinematographer of I Love Lucy. ***
POLTERGEIST - aka, the reason I hate clowns. I know this was directed by Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) but the hand of writer/producer Steven Spielberg is felt heavily throughout. ***
If I had to recommend just one… I can't. I have to recommend them all.
See you next week for more Spooktober thrills and chills.
